Licensees, take note! New York State has recently passed an amendment to the real property law, effective July 1, 2021, and it’s very important you review the changes if you wish to renew your real estate license.
In addition to the present course requirements that call for 22.5 hours of continuing education, you must now additionally include within those hours:

  1. At least 2.5 hours of instruction on ethical business practices
  2. At least 1 hour of instruction on recent legal matters (pertaining but not limited to laws, regulations, codes, court decisions, etc.)

So, if your license is soon to expire, keep in mind that the new requirements are effective on the date of expiration, and not on the date your renewal application is submitted for processing.  If your license is set to expire on or after July 1, 2021, you must meet the new requirements before you can renew.
If you are currently operating under the 15-year real estate broker exemption of 2008, this still affects you! The continuing education exemption is being revoked, so you must complete all of your hours by the date of adoption, July 1, 2021.
